Newtown and Fireworks at Darling Harbour 8/30

I woke up super early in the morning at around 8:30 (haha) to go to Newtown with PhotoClub!

I heard ahead of time from my friend Lynda that Newtown has this strawberry watermelon rose cake that I HAD to try. So, that was going to be the highlight of my day.

I left campus with Hwang. Chloe was the one who told me to go to this event, but she said she would meet me there. Except she overslept.

Hwang caught up on a lot of sleep on the bus on that day.

Anyway, Newtown has a lot of cool alleyways with graffiti (street art). I don't have a fancy camera, so I went more just to experience Sydney :D

Everyone was also really focused on taking artsy pictures, so this was my attempt at taking an artsy picture:

WOW. I'm so multi-talented!

We all went to this boutique shop. Very artsy and hipster.

The group started snapping pictures wildly when the store owner took out these fencing foils, so I took a picture too.

Newtown is really cool. It has colorful buildings and architecture that gives it a completely different feel from the majority of Sydney.

Enjoy some more of the scenery:

There were many things which I did not understand. Among them was this telephone pole covered in shoes. It looked cool though. Very artsy and hipster.

It was around this time that Chloe arrived an hour and a half late.

Chloe was inspired by the previous night's guest speaker, Eric Kim, who is this amazing street photographer. And he basically told us to ask people for pictures and to not be afraid of taking pictures of people in public.

So Chloe asked this guy with dreadlocks for a picture, and surprisingly he agreed.

He didn't smile in the pictures and just kind of looked around. He said that he doesn't take many pictures. After a minute, he biked off into the distance, never to be seen again ~

Meanwhile, I pretended to be snapping pictures of him, while I was really taking selfies.

Then, we walked a bit more and found ourselves at Black Star Pastry. Apparently, I was not the only one who wanted the cake; a bunch of people in PhotoClub wanted it!

It's a strawberry watermelon cake with rose petals and pistachios on top. The layers of the cake are like crushed graham cracker, and cream. The one pink layer is a watermelon slice. And the top is this delicious strawberry-rose-pistachio mix that is just amazing. The cake is so light and perfect. It's like eating a cloud -- a cloud that tastes phenomenal. This cake made waking up early worth it.

After this, Chloe had other plans that she had to go to, so she left. She probably was with us for half an hour!! What a busy bee.

So, we kept walking down the main street in Newtown and got this this giant bookstore.

Someone wanted to go to this bookstore, so the rest of us kind of wandered around and then waited outside on the drizzly day.

We eventually got to University of Sydney, and took a group picture and disbanded.

I was hungry, so I went to get lunch with Hwang and a girl we met in PhotoClub named Emily. Turns out Emily is a full-time student (1st year) at UNSW from Beijing that went to an international high school.

The place we wanted to go to was Brewtown Newtown, which is supposed to be really really good. But, when we got there, the wait was around 45 minutes, and we were hungry, so we decided to search elsewhere.

We decided on this Indian place, which was pretty good. The beef vindaloo was really spicy though.

After lunch, we headed back to campus.

Hwang ended up sleeping for the whole ride back.

That night, I went to see the fireworks at Darling Harbour with Jennifer, Emily (not from PhotoClub), and some of Emily's friends.

I didn't really know what to expect because the firework show is free-of-charge every Saturday at 8:30pm. I set my expectations really low -- like one-firework low. Luckily, my expectations were exceeded!!!

I took over 150 pictures of the fireworks, so I'll just leave it at these 3. I think the firework show lasted around 10 minutes, and they had some pretty decent ones.

Afterward, we went to a bar, decided it was lame, then went to Pancakes on the Rocks instead. I don't know what I was thinking because I did not take a picture of my pancakes, but I got the Devil's Delight, which is described as: "To die for... Our chocolate pancakes with strawberries, cream,  chocolate ice cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce."

I'll let you use your imagination...

Anyway, that was the end of that busy day. I had to wake up really early the next day!!
